Chairperson's Greetings
Welcome to the website of the Sentencing Commission of Korea.
The Sentencing Commission was established as an independent national institution affiliated with the Supreme Court of Korea. Its purpose is to incorporate sound public opinion into sentencing and to develop and revise sentencing guidelines for fair and objective sentencing practices. The Commission also conducts research and engages in discussions about sentencing policies related to its objectives.
Since its inception on April 27, 2007, the Commission has developed sentencing guidelines for 48 types of offenses. This has been achieved by analyzing sentencing materials, conducting research, and gathering public opinion, while continuously updating the guidelines. Additionally, the Commission runs a public experience program called "You Are the Judge" to enhance understanding of sentencing practices.
While sentencing is ultimately at the discretion of the courts, it is essential to uphold the rule of law to ensure that citizens can live with legal predictability. The Sentencing Commission will continue its efforts to establish fair and objective sentencing standards, allowing the public to trust the judicial process, irrespective of which court or judge is involved in a case.
The Sentencing Commission remains committed to listening to the invaluable voices of the public to ensure that sound public opinion and a shared sense of justice are reflected in sentencing practices. Feedback received through public hearings, inquiries, and submissions via our website will be actively reviewed and considered.
By continuously advancing fair and objective sentencing guidelines, the Commission strives to uphold the rule of law and earn the trust and confidence of the public. We respectfully ask for your continued interest and support in the work of the Commission.
Thank you.
